The safety of those who live and work in San Francisco should be everyone’s top concern.

Based on safety walks by the Carpenters Union at Joe Cassidy Construction, Inc. job sites, a review of court records and our experience in the construction industry, the Carpenters Union is concerned about the construction practices at Joe Cassidy Construction, Inc.

We seek to ensure that quality construction standards (such as Building and Fire codes), and worker health and safety standards are upheld in the northern California construction industry. Building residents should not be exposed to unknown risks caused by construction defects, and compliance with health and safety standards should protect workers and passers-by from needless injury.

Residents at Risk?
Safety walks by the Carpenters Union at Joe Cassidy Construction, Inc. job sites have documented what we believe are Building and Fire code issues that warrant further investigation, including defects that could potentially affect the design performance of the buildings in question, putting residents at risk.

Construction practices designed to cut corners on materials and labor costs appear to be commonplace at Joe Cassidy Construction, Inc. job sites, even though such practices may not comply with Building codes or the plans of the Structural Engineer.

Serious questions are raised by practices such as:

» Using unprotected structural steel in a permanent structure: Structural steel is supposed to be protected from fire and corrosion.

» Incomplete or improper installation of Simpson Strong Tie hangers: These hangers are used to support horizontal wood framing members (floor joists and rafters). Improper installation may reduce a building’s ability to resist the forces applied to it, for example, during an earth quake.

» Using concrete form lumber as framing lumber: Materials used in concrete cause deterioration of the lumber, making it inappropriate for use as framing lumber.

 » Improper gas meter mounting

» Cracking Stucco: Stucco cracking in horizontal and continuous line patterns may indicate underlying structural defects.

These issues and others are documented in our Safety Reports. Law suits over construction defects at Ashford Place, 469 Clementina and 3419-25 Geary raise additional concerns.

Workers at Risk
The Carpenters Union cares about safe working conditions on the job. Safety walks by the Carpenters Union at Joe Cassidy Construction, Inc. job sites show what we believe to be a lack of regard for worker safety, including OSHA and Fire code violations.

Issues include:

» Lack of Fall Protection: We found an uncovered elevator shaft, missing handrails on staircases, and missing safety rails.

 » Fire Hazards:
Job site gates are locked, putting workers’ lives at risk in the event of fire. We also found a lack of fire extinguishers at the sites.

» Lack of Personal Protection Equipment:
Hard-hats, safety goggles, and ear plugs are rarely available or used.

 » Unsafe Lighting:
Staircases and corridors lack proper lighting at many sites.
